Migrate from VDS to VSS and vice-versa:

Below steps are given considering the following scenario:

·         ESXi host is in maintenance mode
·         2 Physical adapters per host
·         1 Management and 1 vMotion interface per host
·         ESXi host is connected to Cisco Nexus 1000v VDS

1.       Go to vSphere Distributed Switch in “configuration Tab” and click on “Manage Physical Adapters Link

2.       Remove the vmnic1 (one of the Physical adapter) from the switch using “Manager Physical Adapters” link

3.       Once vmnic01 is removed from VDS, add the vmnic1 to VSS

a.       Note: A new VSS has to be created in case if the VSS does not exist.

4.       Click “Manager Virtual Adapters” in VDS and click “Migrate” & select the virtual interface which is used vMotion (vmk1)

5.       Add the appropriate VLAN ID (which is currently used in VDS for vMotion) and Network Label in “Port Group Properties”.

6.       Click “Manager Virtual Adapters” in VDS and click “Migrate” & select the virtual interface which is used Management (vmk0)

7.       Add the appropriate VLAN ID (which is currently used in VDS for Management interface) and Network Label in “Port Group Properties”.

8.       Remove the second or all remaining physical adapters from VDS and Add it to VSSFinally remove the Host from the VDS

9.       Finally remove the host from VDS by selecting the VDS from “Networking” view and clicking “Remove from vSphere Distributed Switch”

10.   Now you will be able to remove the host from Cluster

Migrate from VSS to VDS:

1.       When the host is in VSS, VDS will have empty configuration

2.       Right-Click on VDS and click add host

3.       Assign appropriate Destination Port Group for the “Virtaul Adapter” selected

4.       Summary Screen will show the interfaces in highlighted text

5.       To vMotion and other features to work properly, Uplink should be assigned to appropriate vnic.
